Do you think Putin will go to court – VG

MAJOR OPPORTUNITY: Volodomyr Zelenskyj met a large, international press corps on Saturday night.

Anyone who has given “the shameful orders” during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will eventually end up in court, Volodomyr Zelenskyj believes.

At a press conference with dozens of international media on Saturday night, Zelensky was asked whether he wanted Vladimir Putin to stand trial.

– If I want it? It is not that I want it, but all those who have given these shameful orders, they will all be brought before a court. I am convinced of that, says Zelenskyj.

The press conference was an unusual affair: it was held at a metro station.

At one point, he was asked if he was afraid to meet Putin, and had to take a break from answering because a subway passed him and the large press presence of international media.

See the special moment here:

– No right to be afraid

When Ukrainian and Russian representatives met for talks in Istanbul in late March, three of them developed symptoms of poisoning. Zelensky, however, denies that he is afraid to face Putin.

– I have no right to be afraid because our people have shown that they are not afraid of anything. They are afraid of their children, that’s true. But people stop tanks with their bare hands, he said.

POPULAR: It is not often that the Ukrainian president holds physical press conferences of this size.

– The war can only be stopped by the one who started it

Asked if he still wants to meet with Putin, he replied:

“Ever since the beginning, I have insisted on negotiations with the leader of the Russian Federation because I believe that negotiations via intermediaries will not have the desired effect,” Zelenskyj replied.

– This war can only be stopped by the person who started it, he continued.

Meets US Secretary of State in Kyiv on Sunday

There have been several rounds of talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. At Saturday’s press conference, Zelensky said that Ukraine will withdraw from the negotiations if the Ukrainian soldiers who are still standing in Mariupol are killed.

Russian forces now control most of Mariupol. But several hundred, possibly a few thousand soldiers and civilians, have entrenched themselves inside the large steel plant Azovstal in the city.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will meet with President Zelensky in Kyiv tomorrow.

On the agenda are deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, says Zelenskyj.
