Do you talk openly about what the menopause is doing to you? | Join the conversation

Research

In 2018, IZZ conducted an investigation into the complaints of the menopause. 500 women between the ages of 40 and 60 were questioned about this. The study showed that 18 percent of women suffer from severe menopausal symptoms. These complaints also include depression.

Not easy

Caroline Tensen is presenter of, among other things, the program 1 against 100. But what no one knew is that a few years ago she went into a major depression due to the transition. “I thought it was never going to get better. You think you’ve changed forever, so you watch everything pass you by. It’s done with your work. You don’t see anything nice anymore. It’s just all a bit black,” she says in her documentary. She mentions in her documentary that it is easy to do and it is often said that women have to go through it ‘just for a while’.

But not only her own story emerges. She also talks to her children, because she believes that they should be able to talk about the transition. Almost everyone has or will have to deal with it. If you don’t get it yourself, maybe your partner or your child will.

The Forbidden Word

The documentary is titled The Forbidden Word because Caroline, as she recently told Jinek, always said that she would never end up in menopause. She thought it was a taboo. It was not allowed to talk about it at her house. “Despite the support of my husband, children and friends, I found the subject too intense to discuss. Especially if you are in the middle of it and you can no longer see an exit.”

Comments

Caroline Tensen is certainly not the only one who has had a hard time in the transition.

Some people have been very open about it from the start.

But that’s also possible….
