The ABP, the pension fund for government and education, has conducted research among its own participants about their pension. Women have little insight into their finances and prefer to leave that to their partner. In addition, women earn between 30% and 35% less than men, due to the income difference and the fact that women often work fewer hours. This can lead to major differences in the final pension amount: the ABP reports that the average pension of a woman is 40% lower than that of a man.
Purchasing power
And these differences have major consequences. The ABP calculates that if a woman decides to work less at the age of 25, she will receive no less than €220,000 less in pension than a man at the age of 70. Moreover, after a divorce, a woman’s purchasing power decreases by 25%, while that of a man decreases by only 0.2%. After having a child, women spend 1.5 times as much time on care tasks than men, the ABP reports on their website.
Campaign
Many women do not know what to expect after a divorce, disability or buying a house. Because of all these figures, the ABP has decided to start a campaign from today to raise financial awareness: “Because by intervening now, women can prevent them from being confronted with unpleasant surprises later.” on www.realitycheck.nl you can gain insight into your situation.
Comments
There is also a discussion on Twitter about the women’s pension. Willie is outraged by the percentages.
Merijn believes that the difference in money stems from the system.
Jenneke thinks her own:
