Many Latvian residents work abroad. Another goes to earn money for a few months and returns, while another moves to live abroad. However, what happens to the income? Do they have to be declared in Latvia and do they have to pay tax?
Latvian citizens often decide to link their career (and life) with work abroad. There are also people who even receive a pension from other countries. Jadviga Neilande, head of the Latvian Accounting Club of Latvia (LGK), emphasizes that the law requires that a resident of Latvia declares all income earned abroad.
“On the other hand, people who have moved abroad do not have to pay taxes here in Latvia. We look at them as non-residents,” the manager of LGK highlights this important aspect.
The representative of the State Revenue Service (SRS) Kristīne Augstkalne-Jaunbērziņa states that citizenship does not in itself create an obligation to declare income or pay taxes in Latvia. Taxes must be paid according to which country a person is a tax resident, as well as according to the country in which the income was earned.
