But very few know what happens when you snap your fingers and what effects this has on the joints in the future.
What exists in the joint and what exactly happens?
In a joint we find two bones that form it, ligaments that connect the bones to each other and a capsule that surrounds and protects the entire joint. Inside it is a synovial fluid that lubricates the joint and reduces friction during movements.
This substance contains gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, and when we try to crack our fingers, we widen the space by enlarging the capsule and force the joint gases in the synovial fluid to move quickly to cover the free space created and then the crackling noise .
The crack we hear is, in fact, the destruction of the gas bubble that forms with a rapid movement of the finger and the movement of synovial fluid in the joint that creates pressure and breaks the gas bubble formed. Therefore, we can only crack a joint once and then we have to wait about 10-15 minutes until the next crack, the time required for the formation of another gas bubble.
Various studies have been performed that have analyzed their effect on the joints over time and if this habit destroys the joint surface, but contrary to what is known, studies have shown that cracking of the joints has no known adverse effects so far.
Just as it has not been shown to hurt the joints, it has not been shown to do any harm. Researchers say that when pain arises, we need to worry.
It is important not to overdo it. The cracking of the fingers may not lead to arthritis, but it can affect the tissues in those areas or by excessive stretching of the ligaments it is possible to weaken the muscles in the joint.
Therefore, it is better to refrain and get rid of this tic.
