Little by little, but slowly anyway, we are learning more about the next generation of desktop processors from Intel. Today, it’s the Core i5-10400 that shows off in photos. This new CPU could interest players on a tight budget by sporting 6 cores and 12 threads for a price anticipated at less than 200 dollars.
For now expected in April (a postponement in June is rumored), the new desktop processors from Intel Comet Lake-S will have the heavy responsibility of initially competing with the third generation Ryzen from AMD, then to time out against the fourth generation of Ryzen desktop chips, expected at the end of the year. Suffice to say that Intel has an interest in negotiating the shift, especially with its future processors, the firm remains clinging to its old 14nm engraving process.
Intel bets on hyperthreading and increased memory cache
To do this, and while waiting to be able to offer better with desktop processors in 10 nm, Intel will bet with its Comet Lake-S chips on hyperthreading and increased memory cache. If these measures can have the effect of a misery cache, they especially allow the Core i5-10400, whose photos have just leaked, sport 6 cores and 12 threads for a total of 12 MB of shared L3 cache.

This is a nice move upmarket. The Core i5 equivalent of the eighth and ninth generations were indeed content with 6 cores and 6 threads for only 9 MB of L3 cache.
A rival under 200 dollars for the Ryzen 5 3600?
The Core i5-10400 will take the place of the very popular Core i5-9400 in Intel’s ranges, and should be sold below 200 dollars (and aim for 220-230 euros in France at launch). Like last year, the chip should be available in an “F” version without iGPU. A modest dark haircut (especially for players since they use a dedicated graphics card), which allowed the Core i5-9400F to be offered between 15 and 20 dollars less than the classic Core i5-9400. In France, we currently find this version “F” at around 170 euros. Intel is expected to adopt the same pattern this year.

In terms of frequencies, the Core i5-10400 would be clocked between 2.90 and 4.30 GHz (4.00 GHz only for all cores), but would remain non-overclockable. What keep its TDP at 65 watts if we believe the first information reached us.
This new Core i5 would finally arrive, by its specifications and its price, opposite the Ryzen 5 3600, current master of the mid-range. The latter is as a reminder provided with 6 cores / 12 threads for 32 MB of cache, 65 watts of TDP and frequencies between 3.60 and 4.20 GHz.
