Infection control measures in Australia’s largest city are being tightened further. The local authorities fear losing control of the delta outbreak.

“Do not leave your house unless you absolutely must,” said Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian to Sydney’s five million residents.
On Friday, 44 new cases of infection were registered in the city, the highest number since the outbreak began.
City has been subject to strict infection control measures for three weeks, but infection rates have only continued to rise.
Berejiklian said on Friday that the people of New South Wales are facing the biggest threat since the pandemic broke out. 439 cases of infection have been registered in Sydney since mid-June.
The number is very low compared to most other major cities in the world, but Australia has so far managed to avoid widespread infection in the population, of which only 9 percent are fully vaccinated.
“We do not have the luxury of being able to consider living with the virus,” said Berejiklian, adding that people must turn the ship around if tens of thousands of deaths are to be avoided.

The latest measures make it forbidden to exercise outdoors in groups larger than two, while the already existing ban on non-essential activities will be more strictly enforced.
– What we need is that everyone follows the current rules. The Delta variant is more contagious than anything else we have seen, said Berejiklian.
