Samsung offered to test one of its latest 2.5 inch internal SSDs. In terms of prices, SSDs are more and more interesting, such as this 870 EVO 1 TB model officially sold around 159 francs and the 2 TB model 319 francs. SATA III 6 Gigabits / sec SSDs capable of reaching read and write speeds of 556/530 MB / s. Migration, testing and printing…
For this test, I decided to update an all using so far a Samsung 850 EVO 512 GB SSD, about three years old.To complete the operation, besides the SSD, it is necessary to use an external SATA-USB box, some models of which are available for around ten francs. For my part, I used a specific bay of this old rather high-tech tower in its time.
The rest of the process is simple. After having retrieved the Samsung Data Migration and Samsung Magician software from the Samsung site, all you have to do is connect the SSD to your machine and start the copy of your old hard drive or SSD on the EVO 870 EVO. After a few clicks, it is simply a question of waiting for the cloning of its disk on the SSD. One. Process which can take several hours and which depends on the speed of its old disk, its SATA interface and the amount of data to be copied …
Connect the new SSD
After about an hour the process ended. 20 seconds later, the e PC turned off. You then have to open your computer to replace the old SSD with the latest Samsung. A very simple operation on this tower designed for geeks. In my case, I had to unscrew a few screws to release the sides of the machine, unscrew the fixing plate and replace the disc, taking care to reconnect it to the correct cables.
When you restart your PC, if you have replaced a hard drive, the speed gain can be impressive, but not in specific cases. Thanks to cloning, everything works as before. To further optimize your system and better manage your SSD, you have to launch the Samsung Magician software, which offers many interesting options to boost the performance of your SSD, even if they are not all always available, since depending on the hardware configuration .
A really interesting migration
Note in passing that the latest Samsung SSDs are optimized to take advantage of the latest features of the Magician software, such as performance benchmark, over provisioning, security erasure or the possibility of encrypting its SSD to protect its machine in the event of loss. Handy, even if some of these features may not work on certain configurations, there too …
Want to change the hard drive of your tower with a PC? It should already be done. The same operation is possible on PCs or MacBooks, as we have already reported in this column. A sometimes beneficial operation to boost old machines or increase the potential of new ones.
In any case, do not forget to make regular updates locally or on a remote service on the Internet. For those in the know, Samsung offers a five-year warranty on this model. He also claims that the 1 TB version supports 600 TB Total Bytes Written (TBW) and up to 2400 TBW on the 4 TB version, it sold 649 francs. A real guarantee of reliability!
