Do not go to the cottage on the weekend

– Now it so happens that meteorologists report that the extreme weather Gyda is over, but at the same time the road conditions are incredibly demanding over the weekend, says department director Nils Karbø for traffic management and emergency preparedness in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to TV 2.

Due to the weather warnings with increasing winds, challenges on the road network and lack of mobile coverage in several places, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration encourages reducing traffic in vulnerable areas.

Especially in the Northwest, Trøndelag and Nordland, the road conditions are demanding. The extreme weather “Gyda” has left clear traces in the last 24 hours.

– There are many closed roads as a result of “Gyda”. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is working to clean up and repair the roads that are closed. But some of the roads have quite extensive damage, so it takes time, he adds.

Even though the rain is over, there is still a great danger of flooding and landslides, mudslides and floods in several places. Strong winds, precipitation, floods and damaged roads mean that several of the roads are closed.

– For us, it was right to ask people to consider carefully whether you have to travel now – or whether you might be able to postpone it. Our most important encouragement is to pay close attention to the weather forecast and traffic reports if you are going to take the trip out, says Karbø.

– How often do you encourage people not to travel to the cabin?

– It really is not a common call or something we like to do, but now it has been extreme weather. That is why we have found it necessary.

All mountain passes in Nordland are closed with the exception of Bjørnfjell near Narvik where column driving is tried. This means that Northern Norway and Southern Norway are divided now.
