An early animation test for the first film, thought to be missing, has been found and you can here to look at.

Zoom Art Studiowho was involved in the production design of the first part, has now uploaded the images online.
This is a version developed in 1995 with Chris Farley providing the voice of the titular character (without Mike Myers’ Scottish accent) using motion capture technology.

Originally it was supposed to Shrek therefore becoming a “dark, sharp low-budget film” that is a far cry from the parody of fairy tale stories that became the widely beloved end product in 2001.
It remains a matter of speculation whether the franchise would have grown in this way as we know it today. But with the surprising recent success of Puss In Boots 2 (and Cameron Diaz working on a Hollywood comeback) it seems like a matter of waiting for part 5.
