Do not be careless! WHO Unveils New Facts About Omicron Variant

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Variant Omicron B.1.1.529 which was first reported in South Africa has spread to various countries in the world including Indonesia. Until December 18, 2021, there are at least three cases of Omicron in Indonesia.

Globally, the omicron variant of Covid-19 has been reported in 89 countries and the number of cases has doubled in 1.5 to 3 days in areas with community transmission, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. /12/2021).

“Omicron is spreading rapidly in countries with high levels of population immunity, but it is unclear whether this is due to the ability of the virus to evade immunity, increased inherent transmission or a combination of the two,” the WHO said in an update.

The body defines omicron as variant of concern on November 26, soon after it was first detected, and much is still unknown about it, including the severity of the illness it causes.

“Omicron clinical severity data are still limited, more data is needed to understand the severity profile and how severity is affected by vaccination and pre-existing immunity,” the WHO said.

In addition, WHO added that data are limited and there is no evidence to preview the efficacy or effectiveness of a vaccine to date for Omicron. The WHO warns that with cases rising so rapidly, hospitals could be overwhelmed in some places.

The evidence is that hospitalizations in the UK and South Africa are on the rise, and given the rapidly increasing number of cases, it is possible that many health care systems are becoming overwhelmed quickly.

For information, the UK reported an explosion of Covid-19 infections for the third day in a row. Friday (17/12/2021), the cases again broke a new record, to 93,045. Omicron is blamed for triggering an 80% increase in new cases in London.
