DNS Belgium carries out registrant verification in. With an automated system, the organization checks the details of persons who register a .be domain name in advance to prevent phishing.
DNS Belgium will from now on immediately check the applicant’s data when registering a .be domain name on the basis of a series of unspecified parameters. If the application is considered suspicious, the domain name holder will be given two weeks to amend his details. According to DNS Belgium persons who wish to commit abuse do not respond to requests to enter correct data.
Although it is not clear exactly on the basis of which an application is classified as suspicious, the organization gives as an example a registration with an anonymous e-mail address, Russian telephone number and Chinese address. If the period of fourteen days has passed and the data has not been adjusted sufficiently, the domain name will not be activated. That must be a difference how security has worked so far.
If DNS Belgium found that false information was used during a registration, the organization sent an email with the request to enter correct information. A period of two weeks also applied, but the domain name was already active within that period. “Cyber criminals can cause a lot of damage in a fortnight. They register, of course with false data, a domain name, send massive phishing emails and steal unsuspecting citizens money via a fake webshop or personal data via a site that is very similar to your bank’s, for example. “, says DNS Belgium.
At the time of writing, there are 1,687,818 registered .be domain names and DNS Belgium is also responsible for the 8319 .brussels and 6549 .vlaanderen domain names.
