The head of the government of the Kherson region, Andrei Alekseenko, said that the flow velocity of the Dnieper River after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station increased tenfold, which complicates rescue operations.
Alekseenko wrote on his channel on “Telegram” that the Russian emergency crews continue their work, with the number of rescue crews rising to 428 people and vehicles to 188, in addition to large numbers of trucks and buses.
He said: At a time when the waters are gradually receding in Novo-Kakhovka, the peak of the floods has begun to move from the Alyoshiki region to Gula Pristan, while the villages and coastal areas are in the worst condition.
He noted that many sites cannot be reached even by special equipment, only by boat, and although rescuers are working non-stop, there are still many who need help.
He said that rescue operations are taking place in light of the continued “Nazi” bombing from the right bank of the river, and this often leads to disconnection.
He added: Rescuers are taking people out of flooded homes, and during the day they were able to evacuate more than 1,000 people in Gola Priestani alone.
He said: Yesterday, the rescuers failed to convince many of the need to leave, and today they must be reached again on board the boats. To complicate matters further, the speed of the Dnieper’s waters has increased 10 times.
