Democrats commenced their convention in Chicago on Monday with a heartfelt farewell to President Joe Biden, who concluded the evening by transferring the spotlight to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Here are key highlights of the first night:

Biden Receives Rousing Reception

President Biden was met with a standing ovation lasting four minutes. In his emotional address, he declared that selecting Harris as his running mate in 2020 was “the best decision I made my whole career.”

“She’ll be a president our children can look up to. She’d be a president respected by world leaders, because she already is.”

He took a moment to remark critically on the former administration and cited numerous accomplishments of his own term in office.

Clinton Emphasizes Historic Potential

Hillary Clinton asserted the importance of breaking the “glass ceiling” of female leadership within the party. She indicated that she wants future generations to understand her support for Harris as potential history-making.

“I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us. They would say, ‘Keep going.’”

Clinton referenced trailblazers in women’s politics, including Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro, advocating for perseverance in the fight for representation.

Trump’s Legal Troubles Targeted

The night included sharp critiques of Donald Trump, with Clinton referencing his multiple legal challenges, prompting chants from the audience: “Lock him up!”

Democrats on Abortion Rights

Democrats emphasized their commitment to protecting abortion rights, using the narrative surrounding the reversal of Roe v. Wade as a significant mobilization point. Personal stories supporting reproductive choices were shared prominently.

Limited Discussion of International Conflicts

The ongoing conflict in Gaza saw relatively little focus during the convention, illustrating a nuanced approach by Democrats who deem such topics may not serve their immediate electoral goals.

Highlighting Project 2025

A notable moment occurred when Michigan state Senator Mallory McMorrow presented a hefty book titled “Project 2025.” This move was part of an effort to associate Donald Trump with a proposed agenda for another potential term, despite his disowning of the document.
