Over the past four weeks, De Nederlandsche Bank has secretly moved 200,000 kilos of gold bars and gold coins from the DNB vault in Haarlem to the new DNB Cash Center in Zeist.
Today was the last transport of the 10.4 billion in gold reserves. The strategic stock of banknotes, worth 4.5 billion, was also brought from Haarlem to Zeist.
The gold and banknotes lay for years under the DNB headquarters in the center of Amsterdam. Due to the renovation of that building, the gold and money were moved in October 2020 to the former money printing company of Joh. Enschede in Haarlem. At that time, the plan was that it would eventually end up in Zeist in a new Cash Center to be built on the Camp New Amsterdam defense terrain.
That center was built on time and within budget, so that the move could now take place. The gold in Zeist amounts to 31 percent of DNB’s total gold stock. Another 31 percent is in vaults of the US central bank, the Federal Reserve, in New York. The remaining 38 percent is in London and the Canadian capital Ottawa.
The gold and money will no longer be returned to the DNB headquarters in Amsterdam, which must be renovated by the end of next year. There, in the middle of Amsterdam, much less strict security is then required and the building will be accessible to the public.
