DNA tests have identified a man in Argentina who was abducted as a baby during the military dictatorship. The man, whose identity has not been released, was the child of political dissidents. His mother was imprisoned when she gave birth to him.

It is the 133rd victim of baby kidnapping during the junta (1976-1983) that has been identified. Human rights organization De Grootmoeders, formed by grandmothers of victims, says that the grandmother searched for her grandson until her death in 2012. At the time, kidnapped babies were placed in childless families that supported the regime. It is estimated that there are 500 babies.

The victim was the son of a nurse and a member of the security forces. He was probably born in 1977. The man had reported himself to De Grootmoeders because he suspected that he had been kidnapped as a child. He had heard that from the woman who grew up to be his sister in the family he had come into.

The man’s biological mother was arrested in July 1976 and held in various detention centers in and around Buenos Aires. In one, she gave birth to her third son, the man whose identity has now been established.

One of the man’s biological brothers was present at a press conference. He said that his new found brother would like to meet all his family. “He is happy, surprised by this huge discovery.”

The man’s mother was never found and probably killed in detention. The man’s father is still alive. He expressed his appreciation at the press conference for the courage his wife had in giving birth to a child in such circumstances.
