DNA testing; 270 deaths have been confirmed

270 deaths have been confirmed so far in the landslide disaster. This estimate is based on DNA testing of the dead bodies and body parts. Cross-matching of DNA test results of body parts and relatives will help the missing to arrive at the actual death toll. 22 bodies identified in the first stage were given to relatives before DNA testing. Later everything was sent for inspection. 420 samples were sent. There were 194 dead bodies. Of the 155 body parts examined, these were found to belong to 54 corpses. Along with this, the number of 22 processed in the first stage has been added to the figure of 270. Blood samples of relatives of 115 out of 118 still untraceable were tested for DNA. Once the crossover is complete, there will be more clarity on unknown entities and the death toll.

No bodies or body parts were found during the search conducted in Chaliyar, Mundakai and Churalmala on Wednesday. The ongoing search will continue for two more days. Minister K Rajan said that everything will be done to find the missing persons. A dead body and three organs found in Tuesday’s search were cremated in Puthumala. Ministers K Rajan, AK Saseendron and OR Kelu visited Churalmala and Mundakai districts on Wednesday and made an assessment including inspection.

379 people received financial assistance

The cabinet sub-committee reported that the government has distributed financial aid to 379 people affected by the landslide disaster. This is the figure until 4pm on Wednesday. An assistance of Rs 10,000 has been given to the families affected by the crisis since Tuesday. 10,000 rupees has been announced as an emergency aid to the families of the deceased since earlier. In addition to this, current support is available. Minister K Rajan said in a press conference that​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ have been released without the ownership certificate.

Experienced team in Wayanad for another 2 days

The expert team appointed by the state government to investigate the landslide and submit a report will remain in Wayanad for two more days. A team led by John Mathai, a senior scientist at the National Center for Geosciences, held talks with officials on Wednesday. They will visit the disaster affected area on Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday he visited the center of the landslide, Smilimatt and the surrounding area.
