Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba assured that the theoretical appointment of Viktor Orban as interim President of the European Council, as well as the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2024, will not negatively affect Ukraine.
Kuleba said this during a telethon on Monday, January 8, European Pravda reports.
The Foreign Minister recalled that the European Union, according to the current President of the European Council Charles Michel, has another six months to elect his successor after Michel takes part in the elections to the European Parliament.
Orban commented on his possible presidency of the European Council due to Michel’s resignation
“You know, as my grandmother said, “we survived hunger, we will also experience plenty.” Even if Orban performs these duties for six months, he will still preside over the European Union during this time, since Hungary holds the presidency. Well, we will survive these six months,” he says.
Kuleba noted that Kyiv has “very intensive work” on the European track and has a clear plan and a clear understanding of “where we are moving, who is working with whom, what is the schedule for making decisions, advocating for these decisions.”
“We, unlike Russia, are all democracies, and therefore we need to be prepared for the fact that any change can occur in any country at any time,” the head of the Foreign Ministry explained.
Media: The EU is not concerned about the participation of the head of the European Council in the elections to the European Parliament
“And no changes in other countries ever drive us into a stupor, or panic, or confusion. Because we know that no matter what the situation is, we will still work to get ours. And we will get ours,” – the minister summed up.
Let us recall that over the weekend, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that he would nominate his candidacy for elections to the European Parliament in June and therefore will leave his post early.
If this happens and EU leaders fail to quickly agree on Michel’s successor, the presidency of the European Council will temporarily pass to the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban – the leader of the country that will preside over the Council of the EU from July 2024 until December.
