Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, warns that the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia can, if necessary, be overturned.
He writes it in a statement Telegram.
– It is a question of choosing which means will be used to protect our people, the state and the interests of society, writes Medvedev.
In his statement, the former premier refers to an alleged sabotage operation, in which he claims that a group must have taken out several railway facilities, as the background to the warning.
It also reacts to the many attacks on military registration offices in Russiaafter Vladimir Putin ordered the mobilization of the Russian population for the war in Ukraine.
– Broken brains are now, unfortunately, a common thing, he writes.
The so-called moratorium against the death penalty was introduced in 1996. It had to be implemented for Russia to become a member of the Council of Europe.
After the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country was banned from the Council of Europe. Medvedev then supported the reintroduction of the death penalty.
– There is a good opportunity to restore a number of important institutions to prevent particularly serious crimes in the country – the death penalty for the most dangerous criminals, Medvedev said, according to Ria Novosti.
