Dm Considers Appealing ‘Climate Neutral’ Label Verdict

According to boss Christoph Werner, the drugstore chain is considering filing an appeal. “We will take a close look at the verdict. Then we will check whether that makes sense,” said the chairman of the dm management board of the German Press Agency. Werner referred to a judgment by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court (OLG) 20 days earlier that allowed the fruit gum manufacturer Katjes to advertise its products with the “climate neutral” label. “The legal opinion of what can be declared and how it can be declared is still being formed,” said the manager.

When companies spend money on compensatory measures to protect the environment and climate, it affects the price of the products, said Werner. “Then you have to be allowed to say that.” It’s not about misleading customers. “That was never our intention,” he said. But if two similar items cost different amounts because something is done for the environment in one case, they are not the same. “If the case law leads to companies not doing anything in this direction, we have gained nothing as a society.” Werner confirmed that dm wanted to continue doing something for the climate and be innovative in this area. “It can happen that you get shot at by environmental aid.”
