Recently, modder PureDark shared on YouTube a brief video demo of the DLSS 3 mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, showing the work in progress on implementing Frame Generation DLSS into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
As mentioned earlier, PureDark originally tested the DLSS 3 mod in Elden Ring, but there were a few issues with this implementation. To better understand what went wrong, the modder decided to implement DLSS frame generation in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as he has a lot of experience with the Creation Engine, he previously released DLSS 2 (Super Resolution) mods for both Skyrim and Skyrim. Fallout 4.
In a test video, the DLSS 3 mod doubles the frame rate of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim when compared to using DLSS Super Resolution alone. The modder also showed a built-in tool to simulate additional CPU usage as a test for those configurations that could be a CPU bottleneck. These are the cases that DLSS frame generation was designed to overcome, as it creates completely new frames without even going through the CPU. The prime example was Microsoft Flight Simulator, which didn’t get any major improvements with DLSS Super Resolution, but doubled the frame rate when using DLSS Frame Generation.
However, the problem with Reflex remains, so currently the latency is not reduced properly. PureDark has reported the issue on the NVIDIA Streamline GitHub.
This first DLSS 3 mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could pave the way for many more, starting with Elden Ring. All of this modding work was made possible by NVIDIA’s decision to publicly share the plugin as part of the Streamline SDK update that was made available at the recent Game Developers Conference 2023.
