Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis star and world number one, has once again made tennis history. In his opening match in the group stage of the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin, he defeated Holger Rune in three sets, securing an impressive record that underlines his longevity and ability to compete against tennis’ elite.
A new milestone in Djokovic’s career
With this victory, Djokovic set a record that only his great rival Roger Federer had ever achieved. It is the eighth time that Djokovic has ended the year as world No. 1 – a record in the history of the ATP rankings. His idol, Pete Sampras, follows with six seasons at the top of the world rankings. Furthermore, the Serb extended his lead as the player with the most weeks at the top of the world rankings. His tally will soon pass the 400-week mark.But another notable achievement came with his triumph over Rune. The victory was his 14th triumph this year against a top 10 player – a feat Federer achieved in his outstanding 2017 season. This is particularly impressive considering Djokovic is playing in his 12th tournament of the year and is only 36 years old.
Djokovic’s impressive record against top players
The list of top 10 players Djokovic has defeated this year is impressive: Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune. His overall record against top 10 -Player is 254-110 (69.8%). This season he has lost just three games against top-10 opponents, for an impressive record of 14-3 (82.4%). With at least two more games against top 10 opponents at the ATP Finals, Djokovic has a chance to break Federer’s record. His next opponents are Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Djokovic is aiming for his seventh triumph at the ATP Finals and would like to equal Federer’s record of six titles at the year-end championships.
