TASS, November 19. World ranking leader Serb Novak Djokovic beat Italian Jannik Sinner in the final match of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Final Tournament. The competition took place in Turin, Italy.
The meeting ended with a score of 6:3, 6:3 in favor of Djokovic. At the group stage, Sinner beat Djokovic with a score of 7:5, 6:7 (5:7), 7:6 (7:2). The Serbian tennis player won his seventh title this season, becoming the sole leader in this indicator. He beat world number two, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who won six tournaments in 2023.
Djokovic won the ATP Finals for the seventh time and became the competition record holder for this indicator. He previously won the tournament in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022. Previously, the record belonged to the Swiss Roger Federer, who won the tournament six times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011).
Djokovic, 36, is world number one and now has 98 ATP titles to his name, including 24 Grand Slam victories, a men’s singles record. The athlete is a bronze medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and a Davis Cup winner (2010). In terms of the number of trophies won in the Open era (when the division between amateur and professional tennis ceased to exist), Djokovic ranks third. Only Federer (103 titles) and American Jimmy Connors (109) are above him.
Sinner is 22 years old and ranked fourth in the world rankings. The Italian has 10 ATP titles. At Wimbledon 2023, the tennis player showed his best result at a Grand Slam tournament, reaching the semi-finals. Sinner qualified for the Final Tournament for the first time; in 2021, the Italian replaced one of the participants during the competition, played two matches and failed to qualify from the group.
Doubles and Russian performance
The winners of the tournament in doubles were Briton Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram. In the final of the competition they defeated Spaniard Marcel Granollers and Argentinean Horacio Ceballos (6:3, 6:4). Salisbury and Ram won the tournament for the second time in a row; in 2022, in the decisive match they were stronger than the Croats Nikola Mektic and Mata Pavic (7:6 (7:4), 6:4).
Of the Russians, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev took part in the ATP Final Tournament, who, according to the results of the draw, ended up in the Red Group. At the group stage, Medvedev defeated Rublev and the German representative Alexander Zverev, but lost to Alcaraz, finishing second in the standings and losing to Sinner in the semi-finals. Rublev lost all three matches in the group.
The final ATP tournament was held from November 12 to 19; to qualify for the competition, you must take a place in the top eight in the championship race. Among the Russians, the tournament was won by Nikolay Davydenko (2009) and Daniil Medvedev (2020).
