Novak Djokovic, the planet’s first racket in men’s tennis, has withdrawn from the upcoming ATP Cup in Sydney, fueling rumors of a possible non-participation in the Australian Open.
This year, only tennis players vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to take part in the Australian Open, but Serbian Djokovic, who is a vaccine skeptic, has avoided talking publicly about his vaccination status on the pretext that it is a private matter.
The ATP Cup will start this Saturday, but there will also be tournaments in Adelaide and Sydney until the Australian Open.
Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times and shares the title of Grand Slam tennis player with Roger Federer of Switzerland and Rafael Nadal of Spain, each with 20 trophies. Federer will not play in Melbourne, but Nadal recently contracted Covid-19.
The season’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, will run from January 17-30.
