Djokovic qualifies at the Australian Open, despite the pain

Serbian Novak Djokovic, ranked fifth in the world, passed the physical challenge that could be the most prominent deterrent to winning the Australian Open title, the first of the four major tennis tournaments, after suffering from pain in his left thigh, to defeat the 28th Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6 ( 9-7), 6-3 and 6-4.

Djokovic advanced to the last eight, where he will face Australian Alex de Minor, for a place in the quarter-finals, on Monday.

The Serbian star aspires to win his 22nd Grand Slam title and seems closer than ever to achieving his goal of equaling the record registered in the name of his arch-rival Rafael Nadal, who was eliminated from the tournament in the second round.

Djokovic needed only 77 minutes to win the first set. “Every point, every game counts,” he said after the end of the match.

“Obviously, I didn’t know how I was going to feel physically, it was going up and down. It was an amazing fight, three sets over three hours. Let’s rest and prepare for the next match.”

Djokovic’s prospective opponent, De Minaur, qualified by defeating Frenchman Benjamin Ponzi 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-1 in the third round.

He also crossed into the next round, Russia’s Andrei Rublev V, by defeating Britain’s Dan Evans 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Rublev hit an expected date with the ninth Dane, Holger Ron, after the latter defeated Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

The adventure of Briton Andy Murray, 35, came to an end after losing to Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 4-6.

The Australian Alex Popyrin was also eliminated from the competition, losing to the American Ben Shelton 3-6, 7-6 (4-7), 4-6.
