Djokovic – Medvedev Final, Australian Open

MELBOURNE: Russia’s fourth-seeded Dan Medvedev defeated fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the final of the Australian Open. In the one-sided final, Medvedev defeated Sitsipas in straight sets. The score was 6–4, 6–2, 7–5. Medvedev, 25, will face defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in Sunday’s final.

Medvedev, who lost in the 2019 US Open final, is aiming for the first Russian men’s Grand Slam title since 2005. Novak Djokovic is on the verge of setting a record with his ninth title at the Australian Open. Medvedev has won three of the four previous encounters with Djokovic, but will have to work hard to beat the Serbian, who has won all eight Australian finals.

Earlier in the day, world number one Djokovic qualified for his ninth Australian Open final by defeating 114th seed Aslan Karatzev of Russia 6–3, 6–4, 6–2. In the semi-finals, the Russian could not hold his own against Djokovic’s all-round performance. After trailing 1–5 in the second set, Karat‍sev fought back to take the game to 4–5, but Joko won the set with a stunning serve. Joko advanced to the championship final after recovering from an injury sustained during the third round.

Third-seeded 23-year-old Osaka defeated 10th seed Serena 6–3, 6–4. Serena led 2–0 in the first set, but gave up the set after 5 consecutive games. In the second set, the two came together with 4 games each, but Osaka took advantage of Serena’s mistakes. Serena made 24 errors throughout the match. Serena left the stage crying after the post – match press conference. Osaka’s opponent in the final will be Jennifer Brady of the United States, who overtook Carolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in a 3 set long fight (6–4, 3–6, 6–4). The women’s final is tomorrow.
