Djokovic is the first to finish the season for the seventh time at the top of the ATP rankings

Novak Djokovic will finish the record seventh season at the top of the world number one and become the leader of the historical table. The Serbian champion, who has so far shared first place with the American Pete Sampras, secured the tennis throne until the end of the year by advancing to the final of the Masters tournament in Paris.

In the semifinals in the French capital, Djokovic defeated today Hubert Hurkacze. The duel with the Polish tennis player turned after the lost opening set and won 3-6 6-0 7-6. In addition, at the age of thirty-four, he will again set his own record as the oldest man to close the year as the world number one.

For Djokovic, historical notation can be a patch for a failed attack on a seasonal grand slam. After triumphs at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he lost the chance for extraordinary success in the US Open final, in which he lost Daniil Medvedev from Ruska.

And it is the second player in the world that Djokovic can repay the defeat from New York in the Bercy hall in Paris in Sunday’s final. Defending champion Medvedev eliminated Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in the second semifinal. In the replay of last year’s duel for the trophy, he won smoothly 6: 2, 6: 2.

Djokovic finished the year in first place in the ATP rankings in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020. Sampras dominated the final standings continuously from 1993 to 1998. American Jimmy Connors, Swiss Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal finished the season five times. .

This year, Djokovic also broke Federer’s record for the number of weeks spent at the top of the list. The Swiss’s performance of 310 weeks exceeded already in March and at the end of 2021 he will have 348 of them. He won the Wimbledon title against his rivals Federer and Nadal, all of whom now have a record 20 grand slam trophies.
