Djokovic donates 1 million euros for medical equipment in Serbia | NOW

Novak Djokovic is the next top tennis player who will help financially in the fight against the corona virus. The Serb and his wife donate 1 million euros for the purchase of medical equipment in his native country.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all medical personnel around the world and in my native Serbia for helping everyone infected with the corona virus,” said Djokovic from Spain in a video conference with Serbian media.

“Unfortunately, more and more people are becoming infected every day. My wife Jelena and I are drawing up a plan for how we can best donate our resources to those in need. Our donation is 1 million euros for the purchase of fans and other medical equipment. “

More than four hundred positive infections have now been reported in Serbia. Eight people in the country have died from the COVID-19 virus. Serbia is still outside the top fifty countries with the most confirmed infections.

Federer and Nadal are also fighting coronavirus

With the donation, 32-year-old Djokovic follows his major rivals in tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. On Wednesday, Federer announced that he would transfer 1 million Swiss francs (approximately 950,000 euros) to Swiss families who are extra vulnerable.

A day later, Nadal said he wants to raise money with basketball player Pau Gasol to fight the corona crisis in Spain. Nadal called on other Spanish top athletes to collectively collect 11 million euros.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
