Despite winning all the major titles and the Golden Slam, Olympic tennis champion Novak Djokovic still feels hungry for more success. “People ask me what I want to win now after the gold medal in Paris,” said the Serb on the weekend before the US Open in New York. “But the goal is always the trophy, that attitude won’t change for me. I still feel the drive, I feel competitive and I want to continue making history.”
Djokovic is the record winner with 24 Grand Slam titles and another win would overtake Australian Margaret Court, who is tied with him. A triumph in New York would also make the 37-year-old the first successful defending champion at this major since 2008, when the Swiss Roger Federer achieved it. The “Djoker” begins his title defense on Monday in the night session against Radu Albot from Moldova. Djokovic: “I can’t wait to go on the court under the lights and the noise with the energy of the stadium.”
The world number two has not yet won a Grand Slam title this year. If he does not win the title in Flushing Meadows in two weeks, he will remain without a major win for the first time in 14 years, despite competing in all four major tournaments.
