Djokovic and Bonmatí, winners of the Laureus sports awards

Madrid. The number one tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, the winner of the Ballon d’Or, the Spanish Aitana Bonmatí, and the English soccer player from Real Madrid Jude Bellingham were the winners this Monday at the 25th Laureus Sports Awards ceremony, which was held in Madrid.

Serbian Djokovic, holder of the record for Grand Slam titles with 24 at the end of a spectacular 2023 season, was chosen sportsman of the year, ahead of F1 world champion, Max Verstappen.

“I am incredibly honored to have won my fifth” award, said ‘Nole’. “I go back to 2012, when I won it for the first time when I was 24 years old. “I am very proud to be here twelve years later.”

Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid’s ‘Golden Boy’, received the award for best new athlete after his exceptional debut with the Madrid club at just 20 years old.

Among women, the Spanish world champion and 2023 Ballon d’Or Aitana Bonmatí was awarded best athlete of the year, after a historic season in which the Catalan took all the individual and collective trophies with FC Barcelona.

The Spanish women’s team, which has won the World Cup and the Nations League in six months, received the trophy for best team of the year.

And the American gymnast Simone Biles received, from a distance, the trophy for the best comeback of the year, while the Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal was rewarded for his foundation and his educational projects in different parts of the world.
