Serbian Novak Djokovic was crowned Wimbledon champion for the seventh time this Sunday by beating Australian Nick Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) and won a Grand Slam tournament again, the number 21 of his career, after doing it just a year ago on the same British pitch.
The former number one in the world and top favorite of the 2022 edition prevailed in exactly three hours of play at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, where he has not lost since 2017 when the Czech Tomas Berdych fired him in the quarterfinals.
Djokovic became champion at The Cathedral of Tennis for the fourth time in a row and was one title away from equaling the top winner of the tournament, the Swiss Roger Federer.
The Serbian was also one conquest away from breaking the 22 Grand Slam record held by Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who retired this year in the semifinals due to an abdominal injury.
This Sunday’s consecration interrupts a streak of three Grand Slam tournaments without recording his name in the gallery of champions.
