DIY deodorant, scrub and … Baking soda: how many properties!

Sodium bicarbonate is an excellent ally for our personal hygiene and to avoid the annoying effects of sweating during sports

Sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate or monosodium carbonate), known by the chemical formula NaHCO3 is a naturally occurring compound. From a chemical point of view it is defined as a sodium salt of carbonic acid, while in common parlance it is called bicarbonate. And it is widely used in the food sector, as an additive in the preparation of packaged foods.

A very pure sodium bicarbonate, suitable for food and domestic use and usable for leavening, for personal care (as a deodorant) and for home hygiene. It has numerous uses: food, industrial and household therapeutics.

It also has the characteristic due to its particular properties of representing a precious – and inexpensive – ally for the care andhygiene of the person and environments.

FOR PERSONAL CARE – It is an excellent personal care product, especially as deodorant in dust, as it is able to counteract acidity and bad odors in the presence of sweat. The slightly basic nature of the water and bicarbonate solutions make it useful in combating not only the presence of bad odors caused by acidity, but also of molds and fungi that live in an acidic environment. Have you ever thought you could create a deodorant natural do it yourself with an economical, ecological, effective and easily available ingredient such as sodium bicarbonate?

Here are some interesting ideas and suggestions.

Baking soda can be used pure as a foot and armpit deodorant, applying it with your fingers or with the help of a powder puff. Ensures freshness throughout the day and, above all, skin protection. It can be applied several times a day even after hair removal because it does not irritate and is not harmful in any way. Obviously the armpit must be clean at the time of application. If you want to increase the beneficial effect of bicarbonate, you can use bicarbonate also for washing. The effectiveness of sodium bicarbonate as a deodorant is very simply due to its salinity: dissolved in water (or in sweat) it gives rise to a slightly alkaline solution, slightly higher than the neutrality value.

  • Easy DIY Natural Powder Deodorant: pure sodium bicarbonate.

Just wipe the baking soda powder directly on your freshly washed armpit, when it is still a little damp and your natural deodorant is already done! The trick of applying it to damp skin makes the powder stick better. It therefore guarantees better effectiveness. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, the light rubbing action due to the presence of a powder under the armpits could cause a slight irritation. The solution? Pass the baking soda in the mixer until it takes the consistency of an impalpable powder.

  • Natural DIY powder deodorant: baking soda and corn starch.

Another very simple solution to obtain a natural deodorant powder is to mix equal parts of baking soda and corn starch. Also in this case it is possible to blend everything to make the powder reach the consistency of icing sugar and avoid any irritation from rubbing. Alternative to the blender: mix everything vigorously with a fork.
Do not add water to this mixture as this would cause double damage: lack of absorbent function and fermentation of starch.

  • Natural DIY Cream Deodorant: sodium bicarbonate in glycerin.

A creamier consistency preferable? One solution may be to buy vegetable glycerin at the pharmacy and add bicarbonate to it until the desired consistency is reached. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the quantities because glycerin could dry out the skin.

  • Natural deodorant from you in cream: baking soda with corn starch and shea butter.

Another recipe for a creamy deodorant is to mix equal parts of baking soda and corn starch and add shea butter melted in a double boiler with a drop of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.

  • Natural DIY spray deodorant: sodium bicarbonate in saturated solution.

Do you think the spray solution is the best for you? Even in this case, making it is simple: just add the bicarbonate to distilled water until it no longer melts and remains on the bottom, then pour everything into a spray of spent liquid deodorant. This saturated solution lasts a long time without being polluted by microorganisms and is also excellent for eliminating bad smells even from sneakers.

It is therefore a cheap product that, in case you don’t like it, can always be used as a deodorant for the home (wardrobes, drawers and shoe racks). Its use is also useful and excellent to help our personal hygiene: it can be used as toothpaste, mouthwash, face and body scrub and is perfect for a foot bath.
