Divertissement is a work by Claude Debussy for piano four hands composed in 1884.
The Divertissement for piano four hands was composed by Debussy in the summer of 1884[1].
The autograph manuscript is kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (music department, Ms. 19182, 20 pages)[1].
A first public hearing of the work was given at the BnF on December 14, 1989, by Christian Ivaldi and Noël Lee on the piano.[2]. The score was published by Durand in 2002 (edited by Noël Lee)[1].
Caroline Waight notes that the Entertainment “begins with rhythmic patterns full of liveliness, highlighted by delicate figurations. It peaks several times before falling back into an enigmatic tranquility. A resounding central section follows, before a tense finale with complex rhythms brings the piece to a close.[3] ».
The average running time of the piece is approximately ten minutes[4].
In the catalog of the composer’s works established by the musicologist François Lesure, Divertissement is numbered L 62 (36)[1].
