“Diverse Latvian Music Scene in the 21st Century: Insights from Baiba Kurpniece”

Interesting as in person, so online are invited to join the last meeting, where they will talk about the diverse Latvian music scene in the 21st century, informs Anita Lazdeniece, public relations specialist of the concert hall.

The lecture will be led by Baiba Kurpniece, creator of the cycle, lecturer at the Department of Musicology of Jāzepa Vītola Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA) and artistic producer of “Sinfonietta Rīga”.

The modern Latvian music scene is diverse and branched, with several generations of composers coexisting. Old masters continue their creative activities in the field of innovation: Pēteris Vasks, Juris Karlsons, Georgs Pelēcis, etc. Alongside them, their former students have gained attention, enriching the overall picture with stylistically new colors.

The core of this generation consists of Andris Dzenītis, Ārik Ešenvalds, Jānis Petraškevičs, Mārtiņš Viļums, Santa Ratniece, Gundega Šmite. The contribution of the younger generation – Platons Buravickis, Jēkabs Jančevskis, Krists Auznieks, Linda Leimane – is versatile.

“The composers’ approaches are very diverse – neo-romanticism, the new simplicity, the new complexity, electronic music and the search for new timbral possibilities – all these paths characterize Latvian music today as a field of multicolored experiments. The music life is also surprisingly rich and intense – the abundance of concerts, the variety of festivals and the public’s interest in music events. We are open to the world and appreciated in the world!” B. Kurpniece introduces the features of the era.

B. Kurpniece obtained a master’s degree in musicology. Since 1997, she has been a lecturer at JVLMA, where she leads the contemporary music course.

From 1998 to 2007, she was the director of the orchestras “Rīga Chamber Musicians”, “Sinfonietta Rīga” and the project “Rīgas Festival Orchestra”, since 2008 she has been the artistic producer of “Sinfonietta Rīga”, and since 2010 she has been the director of “Latvijas koncerti” organized by VSIA “Latvijas koncerti” Artistic director of the Autumn Chamber Music Festival.
