Dive into the World of Dambo Octopuses: Fluttering Ears and Unbelievable Depths!

“Oh, what about fluttering ears,” said one of the navigators, referring to the octopus’s fins, which visually resemble two ears.

It is because of these ear-like fins that finned octopuses (Cirrina) are called “dambo” octopuses, in reference to the children’s favorite elephant that could fly with the help of its ears.

“Dambo” octopuses are rarely seen in the wild, but well known to underwater explorers. These animals have been observed to dive the deepest of all octopuses, sometimes even living less than 4,000 meters underwater.

The octopus captured in the video is relatively large for its species – about 60 centimeters long. Most “dambo” octopuses are no longer than 30 centimeters, however, cases have been observed when they reach a length of up to 182 centimeters.
