Jakarta –
Great Blue Hole is a giant hole in Belize, is one of the beautiful natural wonders and tourist attractions. This circular hole is 318 meters wide and 124 meters deep. Well divers have managed to reach the bottom and there are disgusting findings.
This nearly perfectly circular hole has remained largely unexplored due to a lack of equipment. An expedition to explore the Great Blue Hole, funded by billionaire Richard Branson, was launched in 2018 and went viral this week as proof that ‘humans are terrible’.
In 2018, the crew from the submarine Aquatica descended to the bottom of the Blue Hole. Their mission is to create a 3D map of the interior, but instead are faced with a disturbing sight.
As quoted detikINET from the New York Post, the crew which included Branson found animals such as sea turtles, sharks and large corals. But when it reaches a depth of 90 meters, life begins to disappear.
Erika Bergman, a diver with the expedition, explained that a thick layer of toxic hydrogen sulfide in the lower vent prevents oxygen from getting any deeper. “We found snails and hermit crabs falling into the hole and suffocating,” he said in the interview at the time.
Well, the disgusting findings referred to are trash that can reach that depth. Diver Tim Branson found a two-liter Coke bottle that had reached a depth of 407 feet, as well as a GoPro camera full of someone’s vacation photos.
Alongside the debris were two bodies, believed to be those of three divers lost in the Great Blue Hole from a previous expedition. “We found a few people’s resting place, and we notified the Belizean government. Everyone decided we weren’t taking him. It was very dark and peaceful in there,” said Bergman.
Not all discoveries are so grim. They also found stalactites, ice-shaped formations that usually hang from the roofs of caves, proving the Great Blue Hole was once a cave home to prehistoric life.
However, the discovery of the trash was much regretted by netizens. “Anyone want to explore the Blue Hole with me? Oh wait, humans have ruined it,” wrote one netizen.
“Even places humans have never been to are not safe from our trash. People are terrible,” added another.
Branson himself described the expedition as one of the clearest reminders of the dangers of climate change. “The real monsters facing the ocean are climate change and plastic. Sadly, we see plastic bottles at the bottom of the pit, which is a real scourge for the oceans. We all have to get rid of single-use plastics,” he said at the time.
