José Luís Carneiro was speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony marking the 147th anniversary of the District Command of the PSP, which took place yesterday, where he highlighted this “very positive” data in relation to the district of Bragança. “It has the lowest number of reported crimes across the country”, which demonstrates “the sense of responsibility that citizens, in their attitudes and behaviour, have come to have, but also the effectiveness of the device”.
The District Command of Bragança, with a police station also in Mirandela, is responsible for the safety of almost 35 thousand people, in a total area of territorial responsibility of 68.7 km². Even so, Carlos Anastácio, commander of the PSP, highlighted the loss of troops over the years. Since 2017, 22 elements have been “lost”, going from 196 to 174, with an average age of 49 years. For the minister, “it has been enough to fulfill the mission”.
“The proof is in the fact that there was a reduction of more than 20% in serious crime”, stressed José Luís Carneiro, referring that, in 2022, ten new police officers were placed in that command.
But if serious crime went down, overall crime increased by 10%, justified by “the greater number of PSP operations and the increase in digital crime, the so-called cybercrime”, stresses the official.
In this field, the commander of the PSP reported on some of the most prevalent occurrences, both in Bragança and Mirandela, most of which were related to the issue of noise.
As part of the 147th anniversary, the District Command of Bragança presented the figures referring to the operational activity of 2022, where it carried out 180 arrests, mostly for driving under the influence of alcohol or without legal authorization and also for drug trafficking. In terms of road safety, 6430 infractions were recorded and 263 inspection operations were carried out. Of the 5667 inspected drivers, 1381 underwent a blood alcohol test.
The ceremony, which ended with the imposition of decorations, was also attended by Manuel Magina da Silva, national director of the PSP, and Hêrnani Dias, mayor of Bragança City Council.
