District Administrator Donates 4,000 Euro Check to Food Bank in Nidderau

“When it comes to institutions that live by the food bank idea, like the food bank, we all wish that they would become superfluous. Nevertheless, it is incredibly important that these institutions exist as long as they are needed. They are a great relief for those people who are not on the sunny side of life,” said District Administrator Thorsten Stolz recently at a ceremony in the Main-Kinzig Forum in Gelnhausen. In the Brothers Grimm room, the district administrator presented Petra Simon from the church council of the Evangelische Brückengemeinde and Erika Müller, Agnes Holzapfel and Ulrike Rink from the food bank steering team with a donation check for the sum of 4,000 euros.

At the charity concert “Music Helps 2023”, which took place in Heldenbergen at the end of October, the audience was asked to make a donation in lieu of admission. In the fully occupied culture and sports hall, the Nidderau orchestra and choirs thrilled the guests present with their musical performances. As in previous years, the charity campaign took place in cooperation with the district associations of music and singing societies. District Administrator Thorsten Stolz therefore thanked everyone involved and the concert audience who were happy to donate: “Without the orchestras as well as the music and singing societies who waive a fee for their performance, without the district fire brigade association and without concert guests willing to donate, such an event would not be possible.” Also the Kreissparkasse Hanau, Kreiswerke Main-Kinzig GmbH, Main-Kinzig-Gas and VR-Bank Main-Kinzig-Büdingen generously donated to the good cause, said the district administrator.

As Ulrike Rink and her colleagues reported, the food bank in Nidderau supplies 125 families. Some of the customers have been receiving food since the company was founded in 2009. Each family pays a contribution of one euro, each additional family member 50 cents. There is also a waiting list with another 20 names on it. The war in Ukraine has caused the number of children to increase, says Ulrike Rink. While there were 70 children in 2021, the number has now almost doubled. Unlike the food banks, the food bank can buy additional food. This requires around 1,200 euros per week. “The food markets are calculating more precisely these days and there is less food left over. In addition, the purchasing behavior of consumers has changed. Our drivers pick up significantly less food from the markets than before and we have to buy more,” says Ulrike Rink. Donations of money and food aren’t the only thing that helps volunteers provide for people in need in Nidderau. “We take part in festivals, sell homemade waffles and other things. The money raised goes to the food bank,” said Agnes Holzapfel. During the Christmas season, the 130 children receive Christmas presents. To this end, 130 wish lists will be hung up in the city’s two denominational kindergartens. Parents could take one with them and grant a child their wish. “If wish lists are left hanging, we take it upon ourselves to make the child happy,” explained Erika Müller.

District Administrator Thorsten Stolz took the opportunity to recognize the food bank volunteers: “The food bank does an exemplary job. The helpers look after a total of 330 people. The majority of those active have been involved for many years. I am pleased that the ‘Music Helps’ donation will be able to support their beneficial voluntary work.” The institution of the church is needed and is important, not just at Christmas time. Church tax and church money support meaningful social projects like this, said the district administrator, before adding to the representatives of the parish: “I wish you God’s blessing.”

Also present at the check presentation were Gerhard Naumann, district chairman of the Hessian Music Association, Klaus Ritter, board member of the Main-Kinzig eV choir association, Volker Achtert, board member of the district fire brigade association, Guido Braun, chairman of the Sparkasse Hanau, Oliver Habekost, management of the Main-Kinzig district works, Guido Felix , Hanau City and Country Choir Association, and Alina Zenss present. Markus Heider, pastor of the Evangelical Brückengemeinde Nidderau, was unfortunately unable to attend the check presentation. The Nidderau-Windecken eV singers’ association, the Concordia Eichen and the Nidderau eV wind orchestra took part in the benefit concert in October
