Distribution and quality of public space

Düsseldorf is the seventh largest city in Germany in terms of population. However, when you look at the size of the urban area, Düsseldorf is only in seventy-second place. In conjunction with the high volume of traffic in a metropolis, which is also characterized by a high number of commuters, the individual modes of transport compete very strongly for the limited space.

In view of the aim of achieving equality between modes of transport, the city of Düsseldorf has set itself the goal of analyzing and optimizing public space in terms of local mobility. This will involve giving pedestrians and cyclists more space than before, and thus taking climate protection into account in particular.

In addition to pure mobility aspects, the function of traffic areas as recreational areas must also be strengthened. This increases the quality of life and strengthens togetherness on the streets, for example by creating more space for outdoor dining or communication and play opportunities. This can create new, attractive and safe areas, especially for children and the growing group of older people.

The objective of the Düsseldorf climate adaptation concept to preserve open spaces and green areas must also be taken into account. In addition to their function as important local recreation and recreational areas, these also fulfil important natural functions, for example as cold air channels and sources.

In this context, street spaces must increasingly take on a connecting function in the green and recreational area network and, if possible, have a high level of green space in order to be able to meet the challenges posed by climate change, such as overheated inner cities in the summer months (heat islands).

Last but not least, the needs of people with special mobility needs must also be taken into account. The state capital will therefore consistently remove barriers such as high curbs or uneven and blocked footpaths.

In the spirit of equal mobility, cooperation should also be a priority in traffic areas. All road users should be provided with sufficient space in accordance with their needs and current regulations so that they can move and stay safely in urban areas.
