Physical education is this moment offered to students to move and spend their energy. However, it is sometimes in front of the screen that teachers in this field have had the mandate to activate their students.

Ariane Dulude, a physical education teacher for seven years at Chambly high school, had access to the gymnasium, and unlike some high schools, the students had access to the changing rooms, disinfected by the janitors between each group.

“It affected us in terms of changing standards because our students are now wearing the mask. My colleagues and I do not, however, make them run with a mask. We adapted with the distance. We had to redo an evaluation structure and we had to disinfect the equipment after each use ”, lists the physical educator.

“I teach them that training is not for me that they should do, but for their own health. “- Ariane Dulude

Despite everything, a portion of his task has shifted towards the virtual. “I also worked with remote groups. We divided the course in two. We present theoretical videos, health capsule. There is less classroom management to do. We then do a cardio workout. The pupils do the video exercise in front of the camera. I finish with yoga or, for those who don’t like it, I share a cardio video with them, ”explains Ms. Dulude, who figures the time allocated to physical activity at 40 minutes.

Trust the students

Keeping the student motivated, and especially present in front of a screen, can be a challenge. “I trust them. It’s a letting go on my part. I ask them to activate the camera. If they’re embarrassed, I don’t ask them to see them all, but at least once in a while, so I can see some of their movements. I instill in them that training, it is not for me that they must do it, but for their own health, ”says the teacher, who predicts that a digital portion will last after the pandemic, energizing the course by its different nature.

As for the repercussions on overall health if this type of education lengthened, Ariane Dulude concludes that she “does not believe that it changes the situation. It will be the same time for movement that they have at school. The effects are more in the aspect of socialization ”.
