The own desk as a virtual classroom in the corona pandemic: For many students and teachers in Schleswig-Holstein, this remained a technical wish at the start of lessons after the holidays.
“The whole preparation is useless if the technical component fails.” This is one of the reactions from teachers and parent representatives that a reporter from NDR Schleswig-Holstein heard on Monday at the start of distance learning in hard lockdown. Many teachers reported that servers had crashed – a problem that is not new, although the corona pandemic has been going on for almost a year. On this Monday, video conferences in particular were often not possible via the school server “IServ”. According to the teachers, the messenger services that teachers and students use to communicate with each other sometimes did not work either. In many places, the classic e-mail had to be used.
The program To the point was also about whether homeschooling can become part of school life even after the corona pandemic. more

“IServ” has corrected errors according to its own information
The server capacity was doubled in view of the expected rush of classes that wanted to hold the lessons via video conference, said “IServ” managing director Jörg Ludwig. Due to an incorrect setting, it was initially not possible to start video conferences on Monday morning. The breakdown was fixed at noon. The video conferences were running again, according to the company. IServ is used by around 4,500 schools in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
The digital channels should now “finally work” as long as face-to-face teaching is not possible, demanded Claudia Pick from the state parents’ council of the grammar schools. She also criticized the fact that many schools in the country still do not have WiFi or fiber optic connections. Many teachers also criticized the digital infrastructure. Many students are also not equipped with an end device.
“Itslearning” seemed to be less of a problem
There seem to have been fewer problems with the “itslearning” learning management system. There teachers can provide their teaching material, assign and correct homework. That works well, reported teachers from schools in Berkenthin (Duchy of Lauenburg district) and Gettorf (Rendsburg-Eckernförde district). According to the Ministry of Education, the aim is for itslearning to be used in all 792 schools in the country by the end of the legislative period.
So far, only around a third of schools have used the platform. It also enables student-teacher contact in chat. more

So far, only about a third of schools have used the central platform, which can be made available to all schools. The background is apparently that many schools gained valuable experience in dealing with other platforms in the Corona spring and now do not want to start from scratch.
In “itslearning”, the country offers a task pool for the learning content. The teachers can also create their own content and make it accessible to other educators or benefit from the work of colleagues.
Teachers report: We too are still trying
For last Thursday and Friday, the Ministry of Education announced so-called distance learning practice days for students and teachers. The teachers from Berkenthin and Gettorf NDR Schleswig-Holstein said that they too were still trying out, discovering and learning for themselves. The experiences from the exercise days are now to be evaluated in order to draw new knowledge from them. Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) announced this in December.
Similar problems in other federal states
In other federal states, too, the start of lessons from a distance did not go smoothly. Whether in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg or Berlin – students and teachers were faced with similar obstacles everywhere. The Federal Schoolchildren’s Conference tweeted that the holidays had once again not been used for digital expansion. The federal chairwoman of the education and science union called on the education ministers of the federal states to give more support to digital teaching in schools.
