Distanak Sultra distributes 15 thousand doses of vaccine for Jembrana disease in Bali cattle

Southeast Sulawesi – The Food and Livestock Security Service (Distanak) of Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) distributed 15 thousand doses of vaccine for treatment disease Jembrana that attacked Balinese cattle.

The leader of Southeast Sulawesi Distanak, La Ode Muhammad Rusdin Jaya, said that his party had discovered the case of Jembrana which had spread to several areas. Distanak found 142 cases of Jembrana disease attacking Bali cattle in Southeast Sulawesi until October 2024.

The highest number of Jembrana attacks on Bali cattle was found in South Konawe Regency (Konsel) with 54 cases. It was also found in Kolaka Regency with 30 cases, Konawe Regency with 27 cases, North Konawe Regency (Konut) with 20 cases, Bombana Regency with 8 cases, and East Kolaka Regency (Koltim) with 3 cases.

“The Jembrana case was first reported on 18 July 2023 based on laboratory test results from BBVet, Maros, South Sulawesi. “So far, according to reports from veterinarians from the Bombana Regency Agricultural Service, about 406 livestock deaths have spread across several sub-districts,” he said, Wednesday (9/10/2024).

Following this, the Southeast Sulawesi Distanak has coordinated with district and city offices in Southeast Sulawesi to distribute the Jembrana vaccine to cattle belonging to the community that are identified to the disease affects them.

“We have coordinated with the district and city animal health in terms of assistance in providing Jembrana vaccines,” he continued.

Referring to the website of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Jembrana disease only attacks Bali cattle (it is not contagious to other types of cattle) and is not zoonotic. The disease cannot be transmitted from animals to humans or vice versa.

The disease caused by a retrovirus in Bali cattle is characterized by high fever, inflammation of the oral mucous membranes, enlargement of the immune glands, and diarrhea mixed with blood, and even the death of the animal.
