He is said to have been frustrated at work – so frustrated that one night a trainee set fire to his employer’s workshop and caused damage of two million euros. Now came the verdict.

Because he set fire to his employer’s workshop and caused damage of around two million euros, the district court of Freiburg im Breisgau (AG) sentenced a trainee to three years in prison (judgment of July 25, 2022, file no. 21 Ls 516 Js 10276/21). The decision of Monday is not yet final, said a spokesman.

The public prosecutor had accused the 24-year-old of having been increasingly frustrated at work. One night in early March 2021, he decided to set fire to the vehicle technology plant in Neuenburg am Rhein (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district). He had a key to the workshop and lit fires in several places. Ultimately, the flames would have spread to the entire hall, including the equipment and machines.

The accused admitted the allegations in the process through his lawyer, as the court spokesman said. In addition, he did not answer any questions on the matter. According to the information, the public prosecutor’s office requested a prison sentence of three and a half years, the defense attorney a suspended sentence of two years.
