Dissanayake was declared the winner immediately after the second count of votes, as none of the candidates had received at least 50% of the votes in the first count. The second vote count took into account the second and third choice candidates.
This was the first time since 1982 that the winner of Sri Lanka’s presidential election was determined in a second count.
The 55-year-old Dissanajake won the hearts of voters with promises to improve public administration and fight corruption. He also promised to implement the necessary economic reforms so that Sri Lanka can continue to receive the assistance provided by the International Monetary Fund, which it received after a deep economic crisis in 2022.
