Disruptions and Restructuring: The Canal du Midi Faces Challenges from Canker, Drought, and Development Projects

After the devastating attack on its plane trees by colored canker (from 2015), drought and work disrupted the Canal du Midi, operated by Waterways of France (VNF).

In fact, there are plans for projects linked to the metro, to the south of Toulouse, and to the railway development to the north of Toulouse, which will require total closure. In addition, it will not be possible to use the towpath on the west bank. A detour will be put in place for cycles and pedestrians on the east side.

With the drought, withdrawals from the Aude river will have to be limited: it is one of the major sources for the Canal du Midi, with the reservoir dams of the Montagne Noire and the Ganguise.
