Flight Diversions Hit Logan Airport Amid Severe Thunderstorms
On Saturday night, Boston’s Logan International Airport became a temporary refuge for dozens of diverted flights due to intense thunderstorms striking the Northeast. As a result, many passengers were left scrambling to make their way to their ultimate destinations.
Massive Disruptions as Flights Redirected
Flight operations were severely impacted, with as many as 25 international flights, along with additional flights from New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., redirected to Logan Airport, according to a statement from Massachusetts Port Authority (MassPort).
Challenges Faced by Stranded Passengers
Upon landing, Logan Airport was unable to provide critical services including gate access, fuel, or aircraft maintenance, as highlighted in an Air Traffic Control Advisory. This led to many flights remaining on the tarmac, creating a chaotic situation. Passengers faced delays of up to six hours onboard their aircraft, with some reporting a lack of food, power, and even access to restroom facilities. Due to a full house of hotels in the vicinity, a number of travelers were left with no option but to sleep in the airport.
Assistance for Passengers
MassPort confirmed that efforts were made to transport passengers to terminals, where they are coordinating with their airlines to travel to their intended destinations. However, a number of individuals expressed frustration as they were left to navigate rebooking their travel plans on their own.
