A major mistake cost the Dutch skaters victory in the team pursuit during the World Cup competitions in Tomaszów, Poland. Joy Beune forgot to put on her transponders and therefore no time was measured. The Dutch team was disqualified.
Beune, Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud rode a good team pursuit and seemed on their way to victory after Canada was defeated in the last stage. But during the ride it became apparent that the time was not being recorded. Groenewoud also saw that when she crossed the finish line.
“I looked at the time screen and we didn’t have time. Then we quickly found out that Joy had no transponders, so disqualification follows. This is a tough lesson, this should not happen.”
Beune guilty: ‘Someone took them’
Beune was guilty. “I looked for my transponders before the race, but they were gone. Someone took them. Although the rule is clear, I just started.”
