Jakarta –
Disorders of the respiratory system are conditions when oxygen binding in the respiratory tract cannot occur properly. This can disrupt air flow in the body. Quoted from the Tasikmalaya Health Polytechnic repository, diseases of the respiratory system are usually caused by viruses, bacteria and other substances that have a negative impact on the body.
Disorders or Diseases of the Respiratory System
The Denpasar Health Polytechnic Repository explains that the upper respiratory tract starts from the nose, vocal cords, paranasal sinuses, to the middle ear. Meanwhile, the lower respiratory tract starts from the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
Quoted from the UnityPoint Health website, diseases of the respiratory system are those that affect both channels:
1. Asma
This condition causes difficulty breathing due to inflammation of the airways. Asthma symptoms include a dry cough, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. Allergic reactions, infections and pollution can trigger asthma attacks. Generally, asthma starts from childhood to adulthood. However, some people over 60 years of age develop asthma as adults.
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an umbrella term that includes several respiratory diseases. This can cause shortness of breath or an inability to breathe normally.
Sufferers usually experience symptoms, namely shortness of breath, cough with phlegm, especially in the morning. COPD can progress for several years without signs of shortness of breath. This disease usually starts from the age of 30.
3. Chronic bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a type of COPD characterized by a chronic cough. Usually, people cough up phlegm, especially in the morning. This happens because the mucus glands in the respiratory tract increase their production.
The patient must cough to expel the excess mucus. Because bronchitis is a form of COPD, the way to treat it is the same. This disease develops from viruses or bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms will subside when the infection has healed.
4. Emphysema
Emphysema is a serious respiratory disease and another form of COPD. The common cause of this condition is smoking. Those suffering from emphysema will experience difficulty breathing. Cigarette smoke damages the air sacs in the lungs to the point where the air sacs cannot repair themselves.
5. Lung Cancer
Cancer has the ability to develop in any part of the lungs. This makes cancer difficult to detect. Most often, cancer develops in the main part of the lung near the air sacs.
Symptoms of this cancer last for years. Symptoms include chronic cough, voice changes, loud breathing sounds, and coughing up blood.
6. Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic respiratory disorder caused by a defective gene that produces mucus. This mucus can block the respiratory tract. Additionally, mucus can cause lung infections and pancreatic blockages. Symptoms of this disease are chronic cough, frequent lung infections, and poor growth rates in children.
7. Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a condition where the patient experiences abnormal widening of the bronchial tubes. This allows mucus to pool and cause respiratory tract infections. Symptoms also include shortness of breath and wheezing.
8. Pneumonia
Pneumonia is a common lung disease caused by infection in the air sacs of the lungs. Infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
Symptoms of pneumonia include cough, fever, chills, and shortness of breath. It is very important for adults over 65 years of age to get pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination as a precaution. Another way is to wash your hands frequently and get a flu shot.
9. Influenza
Quoted from UMS eprints, Influenza is a respiratory disorder caused by the influenza virus. This disease can spread easily from individual to other individual. This virus is spread throughout the world and has the potential to infect regardless of age and gender.
Flu is a disease that has a time limit for healing itself. If there are no other complications, it will usually heal in 4 to 7 days.
10. Pleural Effusion
Pleural effusion is a collection of fluid between the lungs and chest wall, which is called the pleural space. These fluids can collect for various reasons. Starting from pneumonia, cancer, or congestive heart failure.
Usually patients experience symptoms such as chest discomfort and shortness of breath. Sufferers usually undergo a procedure to remove the fluid, which allows the lungs to re-expand. This is an explanation of disorders or diseases of the respiratory system. Hope it is useful.
