Disorder broke out in the National Assembly when deputy Sol Zanetti blew into a balloon before letting it twirl in the Blue Room, provoking the indignation of the CAQ and the liberals.

When the cat’s away the mice will play. In the absence of President Nathalie Roy, parliamentarians were more agitated than usual on Thursday, making the task of Liberal MP Frantz Benjamin, who was trying as best he could to chair the proceedings, difficult.
Quebec Solidaire MP Sol Zanetti finally set things on fire, by inflating a blue balloon before releasing it to deflate.
“There are not many words that can describe the deflation of CAQ nationalism, but perhaps this image could help,” he said.
Behind him, the elected officials of his party sneered.
Mr. Benjamin then intervened to remind Mr. Zanetti that this type of gesture is not permitted within the confines of the National Assembly.
The gesture of the supportive MP was not appreciated on the other side of the House. The leader of the government, Simon Jolin-Barrette, demanded a more severe sanction for the QS deputy, which Mr. Benjamin refused to do.
Tempers continued to flare, and faced with such chaos, Mr. Benjamin was forced to suspend the work of the Assembly for around ten minutes.
Upon resumption, Mr. Zanetti was not sanctioned for his actions.
“The gesture made by Sol Zanetti at the Salon Bleu is unacceptable within our institution, our National Assembly. Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois must apologize on behalf of his political party,” the interim leader of the Quebec Liberal Party wrote on X a few minutes later.
This is the second day in a row that Nathalie Roy’s absence has been felt in Parliament. On Wednesday, CAQ MP Sylvain Lévesque called himself “Madam President” a few times while presiding over the proceedings, which each time provoked small sniggers.
