Jakarta – When you talk about Disney, what you imagine is a warm children’s and family film that depicts fantasy full of stories rich in good values. However, it is different from the Disney film entitled Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
Almost all Disney films are in the PG or PG-13 category, which is still suitable for children to watch (accompanied by their parents).
They build their company’s image as child-friendly entertainment. However, that doesn’t mean they never produce adult or Rated-R films.
After the 70s, they began to look at films with different genres in accordance with the trend at that time where cinemas began to be flooded with crime-themed and more brutal films.
In 1984, Disney, which was then under Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, began to go against the strong traditions that had been built since 1923.
The first adult-rated film made by the company with the Mickey Mouse logo was Down and Out in Beverly Hills, which was released in 1986.
Directed by Paul Mazursky, this film is adapted from the French story entitled Boudu sauvé des eaux. The story tells of a wealthy but problematic family in Beverly Hills whose lives change drastically after helping a homeless man who almost drowned.
Different from previous films, Disney also presents adult themes such as sex, drugs and swearing in the film starring Nick Nolte, Bette Middler and Richard Dreyfuss.
This film immediately received attention and was successful in domestic screenings with revenues reaching USD 62 million. They also became one of the highest grossing films of that year.
This also influenced the development of other studios in Hollywood, such as Touchstone Pictures Film and Miramax, which were inspired by the bold steps taken by Disney.
